I Prayed for 21 Days and Here’s What Happened

Everyone knows that one person that you only hear from when things are going wrong, or when they need something from you.  Once you recognize that’s how that person is, you know how to deal with them.  You see that person reaching out and immediately it’s like ugh, what do they want?  Well I discovered that’s how I was doing God, in my prayer life.

Praying daily has been something that I’ve always struggled with. It always landed itself near the top of any new goals list. God seriously began to deal with me on my prayer life.  He gave me a nudge like hey Khelli I want to hear from you more.

I did desire to have a closer relationship with Him, and I also began to understand that there are battles that have to be fought spiritually.  Side note, without sounding like a creepy christian, there are powers and principalities out here that don’t want to see you draw closer to God, succeed in the plans that He has for you, and want to keep you bound; that’s another post for another day.

Prayer is so important and is for everyone. It is our direct line of communication to God. It’s our opportunity to tell Him what’s going on, bring our requests, thank Him for what He’s done, as well as hear from Him.   I should also add that I don’t believe God is sitting up there marking off if you’ve prayed daily or not. That’s not what this is about, God looks at our hearts, and my desire was/is to truly to draw closer to Him.

I decided that I was going to challenge myself to intentionally pray for 21 days. Why 21 days you ask, well because there’s some studies that say it takes 21 days to establish a habit and there are other studies that contradict that. To me it was just three weeks, 21 days.  I could commit to doing something for 21 days. Since I wanted to be intentional about all of this, I decided to write down why I wanted a more consistent prayer life.

My why, straight from my Evernote app

I didn’t put any other parameters on my personal prayer challenge other than I had to touch base with God daily.

Here’s what I noticed at the end of the 21 days:

  • Overall felt closer to God.
  • At the beginning of the 21 days I didn’t have much to pray about but by the end I had lots to say. I think this was due to my habit of only praying when things were wrong.
  • Some days my prayer turned into singing a worship song or dancing to praise music.
  • I learned that the pause, and by that I mean listening to if God had something to say to me, was just as important as the prayer.
  • The more I prayed the more I wanted to pray. The more I checked in with God the more stuff I wanted to tell Him.

Overall I’m glad I challenged myself to pray for 21 days, it not only allowed me to get closer to God, it also jump started my goal to develop a habit of prayer. I would recommend anyone with a desire to have a closer relationship with God to take this challenge. You owe it to yourself to be your best self, live convinced!
